Rare Music Feature: Hyper Game Music Event 2007 EXTRA The Live Album Vol.1

This is an interesting one. In collecting links for my upcoming Silent Hill special feature, I came across two unusual remixes: Live performances of the Silent Hill theme and Theme of Laura, done by Akira Yamaoka with Norihiko Hibino. I searched around for the album and found this rare gem!

Hope Rides Alone!

The Sons of Fate

Remember Mega Man 3?

Well, the Protomen certainly do. They took their childhood interpretation of the simple yet beautiful story these games told and turned it into a literal Rock opera!

Of course, it would be a bit lazy of me to just make a pun and run, wouldn’t it? So here’s some info and goodies!

They have a total of three albums so far: “The Protomen”, their first full album; “Makeup and Vanity Set Presents: The Protomen”, an 8-bit style chiptune cover of the first album done by Makeup and Vanity Set; and finally, “Father of Death”, a prequel album that is not yet complete. I will provide a high quality sample song for each album!

“The Will of One”, from The Protomen.
“The Stand 1986″, from Makeup and Vanity Set Presents: The Protomen.
“Breaking Out”, from Father of Death. (Also my personal favorite Protomen song!)

The middle link is to a Last.fm page featuring the song. I searched for a good few hours and couldn’t find any mp3 previews of Makeup’s covers; I thought there was at least one for “Vengeance?”, as you can preview it even on the Protomen’s site. Oh, well. To make up for the lack of a Makeup mp3, you may preview what seems to be the entire album for free at StumbleAudio!

Be sure to visit the official website of the Protomen.
Also check out the MySpace for Makeup and Vanity Set.

Here’s a bonus! On the Protomen site, click “experience”. A new window will pop up displaying an old TV set playing the official video for “Hope Rides Alone”. Watch it if you haven’t! Then click “enter site”, up at the top of the TV. You will be taken to a map of “The City”. Move your cursor to the lower left area, and find a building that is labeled “Music”. A few buildings over, directly east of the Music building, should be an unlabeled building. This will take you to a gallery of Protomen tour fliers!

Lastly, I will provide links for those who wish to purchase the albums mentioned. There’s even a 7″ single for Father of Death available!
Please support these guys! Protomen and Makeup are awesome independent artists that deserve all the support they can get.

Hey, Music Lover!

I’m going to start posting music that I find around the internet. Most of it will be game soundtracks and related materials. I’m just finishing up finding every single Silent Hill related music file on the internet. I’ll organize the links and post it all up in an upcoming entry.

Hope you look forward to it! All ONE of you. :P

Re: Ranting and Balls

I dunno. It looks long and ugly. I feel like I made a good point, but I also feel like I could have done it without ranting. I like to take a kind of “stream of consciousness” approach, but I think I should abandon that in favor of a more concise approach. If anyone ever reads this, I’m open to suggestions, advice, and criticism!

I’m hearing a lot of talk about how bad that Dragon Ball Evolution movie is. I haven’t seen it yet, I might not see it at all, but… was anyone actually expecting it to be good? Was anyone really surprised that it wasn’t good?

From what I’ve seen and read about it, it’s just fanfiction with a big budget. It probably made Toriyama cry. At least it’s not a “slash fic”.

Re: Addiction

Eee, my first rant! :3

I’m scanning about Gamefaqs looking to see if the Resident Evil 5 downloadable content is worth it or not (jury’s still out on that) and I see a link featured somewhere near the top that says “The truth about game addiction.” Honest to Buddha I thought it was going to be an April Fools article I’d not yet read.

Go ahead and read the whole article if you like.

Upon reading the article I was pleasantly surprised. It was very informative, not at all biased, and cited a variety of sources on the issue.  It was the last page that really caught my attention. If you’re not going to read the whole article, at least read the last page because my lazy ass isn’t gonna copy and paste for your lazy ass.

I can relate to those two guys. Only my “problem” isn’t video games. I play video games, yes, but my “problem” is a bit different. I like to think, I like to learn, I like to write. These are my obsessions.

Sometimes I lie awake at night pondering something I’ve read. When left to myself I often sit around just listening to music while creating and refining different fictional characters and story lines in my head. Sometimes I sit down and feverishly write about them. Sometimes I get heavily interested in some new topic and spend hours learning everything about it that I can find. This is my tendency, as gaming is the tendency for the two people mentioned in the article .

I’ve lost sleep because I prefered to lose myself in thought. I’ve postponed studies because I prefered to write out my ideas. I sometimes skip a meal because I’ve completely lost track of time while looking into some new and interesting concept.

This is who I am. If I sound a bit pretentious or even prideful, believe me, I’m not. I like to think, learn, and create.  I express this through introspection, writing, and research. Other people express it through playing video games. Setting labels like “addiction” aside, what’s the difference?

What makes one habit or tendency arbitrarily “healthy” and the other arbitrarily “unhealthy”? Where do we draw that line and why? I’ve never read a serious article addressing potential addiction to music, or movies, or books, or art, or any other hobby. If you overindulge yourself in whatever you do for entertainment there’s a bevy of of terms that can be used to describe you. Adding “addict” to those terms only shifts the focus to the symptoms rather than the root problem itself.

Obsessive behavior is not the fault of the obsession but of the obsessed.

Cellar Door

So I still can’t get Donnie Darko out of my head.

It was an unusual movie. It was an amazing movie. It was unusually amazing. I won’t give too much away, but the movie takes space/time bending concepts and explores them with some excellent characters. The space/time stuff keeps it from being just a normal “coming of age” film, and the great characters keep it from being just another sci-fi flick.

Go watch it by whatever means possible. Don’t get your hopes up for the sequel, though. The writer/director of the original has no involvement in it at all. That doesn’t mean it can’t be good, but it’s best to approach it without high expectations.
